In 1958, workers at the Southwark Brewery (now West End Brewery) on Port Road, Thebarton, established the Riverbank Gardens alongside the Brewery to cover a dumpsite. Christmas decorations were first erected in the Riverbank Gardens in 1959. This has become an annual event and a South Australian tradition. More than 100,000 people visit the display from mid-November to early January each year. Throughout the years displays have been erected to commemorate other occasions such as Easter and the Adelaide Festival of Arts. There are also some objects on display all year around.
