Born in Adelaide in 1891, actor Harry van der Sluys (or Sluice as his headstone records) became famous as comedian Roy Rene.
He was one of the most well-known performers on the Sydney vaudeville circuit and later became renowned around Australia as Mo, in the comedy duo Stiffy and Mo with Nat Phillips. Mo was known for his distinctive black and white face make-up. In the 1940s Rene turned to radio. His radio show McCackie Mansions earned him a cult-like following. Rene died on 22 November 1954.
The Australian entertainment industry's annual award, the Mo Award, is named after him.
