New Residence was established in February 1895. The first 14 settlers were friends from Port Adelaide and the others were people whom they had personally selected. As a result, there was little dissent amongst the settlers unlike many of the other settlements. However, New Residence was abandoned in late 1896.The land could not support the crops required for the settlement to be self-sufficient. This was partly due to the poor weather conditions of 1895 and to the degradation of the land by the goats that the settlers brought with them and the rabbits that overran the area.
