Point Turton was named by Captain Hutchison, RN, commander of the survey schooner Beatrice in the 1860s after HH Turton, manager of the Savings Bank of South Australia and husband of Governor Daly's daughter.
In the early 20th century limestone was quarried at Point Turton for use as flux in the metal smelters of Port Pirie. The quarry was closed in 1917.
