The northernmost point of the 'foot' of the Yorke Peninsula, Corny Point was named by Matthew Flinders on 18 March 1802 and described by him as 'a remarkable point'. Just a month later the French explorer, Captain Nicolas Baudin, also travelled to the area and named it Point Berthier. The first pastoral lease in the district was made to James Coutts in 1846.
