Port Augusta: Why a port? |
Port Augusta, located at the head of Spencer Gulf in South Australia, lies west of the Flinders Ranges. It is the most northerly port in South Australia and is located 308km from Adelaide.
Over time Port Augusta has weathered economic peaks and troughs and has learnt to reinvent itself.
For example, during its history Port Augusta has changed from South Australia's second largest port to railway hub, and today Port Augusta has reinvented itself again as the capital of the outback, a place where tourists heading for Eyre Penisula, Western Australia, Alice Springs, the Northern Flinders and the Birdsville Track pass.
Port Augusta continues to reinvent and position itself to make the most of the opportunities South Australia's northern mining boom promises to bring.
