Description : |
The original design of the cathedral was undertaken by English architect William Butterfield who favoured the cathedral being built in brick with extensive coloured banding and polychrome work, a style in vogue in England at the time. However, Bishop Short wanted stone. In order for this to occur Bishop Short purchased Butterfield's plans. These were revised twice by local architect EJ Woods from the firm Wright, Woods and Hamilton. Despite the cathedral taking almost 40 years to complete from when Bishop Short laid the foundation stone in June 1869, the whole conforms to the original plan prepared by Butterfield. Butterfield's brickwork and polychrome work was replaced with ashlar sandstone and limestone masonry. The towers and spires were completed in 1902, and a Lady Chapel was added in 1904. The cathedral is built in the Gothic Revival style and is considered an important example in Australia. It has been constructed from Tea Tree Gully stone and has open supporting arches and several fine stained glass windows. Its position at the top of King William Road, North Adelaide gives it a commanding position in the Adelaide landscape. St Peter's Cathedral is listed on Australia's Register of the National Estate and the South Australian Heritage Register. |
