Description : |
Charles Mullen and family. In 1868 Charles Mullen developed 'mullenising', a method of clearing mallee scrub, near Wasleys, north of Adelaide in the Clare Valley. The process involved several steps. Mullen invented a horse drawn machine using an old steam boiler filled with rocks and used this to clear the mallee scrub. Wheat was then sown in the felled scrub and after the crop was harvested, the land would be set on fire to stop the mallee regenerating. The Mullenising method, like the Stump Jump Plough, improved on the time consuming task of clearing land filled with eucalyptus mallee stumps and stones by hand. In South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales this enabled the clearing of mallee land which was previously thought to be too difficult to cultivate. |
