Description : |
In 1859 the Aborigines' Friends' Association established a mission on the shores of Lake Alexandrina in the country of the Ngarrindjeri people of the Lower Murray. George Taplin, the Congregational minister, was its first administrator. Taplin took a more enlightened attitude to the customs of the Aboriginal people than many Europeans, and recorded much of their language and customs. His dedication to this work contributed to his early death in 1879, aged 47. The register kept by George Taplin began as a list of those connected with the mission 'by employment or instruction'. It records the names of many of the people who are also referred to in Taplin's journals. Names well-known in the Aboriginal community - including Unaipon, Sumner, Gollan, Tripp and Rankine - appear in the register. |
