Description : |
Nest Egg Gold Mine, Woodside. In 1846, the Victoria Mine 18 kilometres north-east of Adelaide was the first place to produce gold in South Australia.
A rush soon followed and prospectors struck gold at Chapmans Gully and throughout the Mount Lofty Ranges. The Echunga Goldfield was proclaimed in 1852 near Hahndorf. This was followed in 1868 by the Barossa Goldfield. Then came the Birdwood Goldfield in 1869, the Woodside Goldfield in 1881 and finally in 1909, the Deloraine. According to the South Australian Department of Primary Industries and Resources, PIRSA 'The history of (these) discoveries was characterised by short periods of high production which had a significant effect on population movements during the development years of the State... The Woodside Goldfield (had) a recorded production of ~933 kg from 1881 to 1938. Gold occurred in quartz-sulphide reefs within Umberatana Group quartzite and schist over a distance of ~3 km. Sulphide minerals included pyrite, arsenopyrite, galena and chalcopyrite. The major mines were Bird-in-Hand, New Era and Eureka. The goldfield was found by the discovery of alluvial gold which continued to be a minor producer in the area.' In 2008 a new mining development project, Bird in the Hand, was proposed for the Woodside area. This has met with some opposition from members of the local community. |
