Description : |
Excelsior Gold Mine, White Range. The White Range settlement area is near the Arltunga Goldfield in the Northern Territory. Arltunga once held 3,000 people and is believed to be Central Australia's first town. It was a mining town from the first discovery of gold in 1887 until 1913, almost 30 years. Conditions were harsh. To even reach the goldfields, prospectors had to travel 600 kilometres from the Oodnadatta railhead. Arltunga and the town of Alice Springs were connected to the Overland Telegraph Line. The town of Arltunga has been partially restored, preserving significant elements of its gold-mining history. |
