Opal Fields at Coober Pedy. In 1915 teenager Willie Hutchinson was prospecting for gold with his father and found the first opal at Coober Pedy. Opal is a form of silica. The arrangement of the silica spheres within the mineral produces the spectrum of colours that we see. |
