Description : |
Map of the country explored by Stephen Hack and party north of Streaky Bay in 1857 for the S.A. Government, with exploration routes shown extending east to the southern section of Lake Gairdner and nearly as far as Lake Gilles. The map includes part of the coast line of Eyre Peninsula from Streaky Bay to Venus Bay, and 17 different areas (lots 4-20) coloured dark brown (obscuring any printed information within), showing the extent of pastoral runs. These are summarised in a table within the map area. Map by W.G. Harris, surveyor to the expedition. Scale approximately 1 inch to 10 miles; lines of latitude and longitude incorporated in map border. Stamped 10.9.[18]58. Hack's explorations had discovered 4000 square miles of useful pastoral country. By late June 1857 his party was approaching the Gawler Ranges, and discovered well watered, grassy country. Hack rounded the southern end of Lake Gairdner and discovered what appeared to be permanent water at Yardea, Pondanna, Kodondo, Cockatoo Springs, Polturkana and Paney. The area seemed to be useful agricultural land. Good country was found north and west of the lake. |
