This piece comes from the papers of George Tinline, Manager of the Bank of South Australia, and other family members, comprising correspondence, letterbook, papers re employment and Lyndon Estate, financial papers, diaries, notebooks, autobiographical notes, scrapbook, drawings, photographs, maps and printed material.

George Tinline (1815-1895), bank officer and pastoralist, was born in Jedburgh, Scotland. He was a clerk with the Bank of Scotland 1833-38, then migrated to Sydney. Tinline was an accountant with Bank of South Australia from 1839, and was promoted to Manager in 1852. He proposed the Bullion Act in 1852 which made gold legal tender, and solved a monetary crisis for a bank which was starved for coin following the Victorian goldrush. The colony rewarded Tinline with $5000, which he invested in pastoral interests with his brother John.

Helen Madder emigrated to Adelaide in 1843 and married George Tinline in November that year. The couple later had 6 children. In 1863 they returned to London to live, later travelling through Europe and embarking on a world trip 1880-81.
