Description : |
Portrait of E. Whitby from Willowie from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/4). Alexander Campbell and Malcolm Gillies established the Willowie cattle run in 1846. It was later taken over by John Howard Angas in 1851. By 1872 Willowie Run extended from Wilmington to Bangor and from Coomooroo Hill to the coast of Spencer Gulf. It was in this year that the name was changed to Mount Remarkable Run to distinguish it from the town of Willowie. The Hundred of Willowie was declared in 1875. The town of Willowie was declared and surveyed and the first blocks of land were sold in May 1878. It is not known whether E. Whitby was associated with the station or the town of Willowie. |
