Description : |
Portrait of F. Thomas from Mundowdna from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/3). Mundowdna Station is in in the Far North of South Australia about 10 kilometres south east of Marree. The lease for a run was first taken out in 1859 by T and A Matthews. The property changed hands a number of times and was owned successively by Debney and Woodforde, William Sims, and Edward Chapman in 1873. By 1891 it was owned by John Whyte and his nephew Frank Whyte. Mundowdna was about 800 square miles in extent and was stocked with cattle originally but subsequently with sheep. It was watered by an artesian mound spring. The station was subsequently bought by Sir Sidney Kidman who acquired it because of its closeness to the railway at Marree at the southern end of the Birdsville stock route. Cattle brought down the stock route could be rested at Mundowdna before being freighted down to the markets in Adelaide. No information has been located about F. Thomas who was possibly an overseer at the time the photograph was taken. |
