Description :

Portrait of J. Hill from Bundaleer from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/4).

The death of Joseph August Hill was reported in the Critic, 13 July 1904, p. 7, col. a. Hill arrived at Glenelg in June 1836 aboard the Africaine (ship), along with passengers Robert and Mary Thomas (Robert Thomas was South Australia's first Government printer). Hill witnessed the arrival of the Buffalo (ship) with Governor Hindmarsh on board, and he was present at the flag ceremony at Glenelg when Governor Hindmarsh read the Proclamation of the colony of South Australia and where the Union Jack flag was hoisted.

Hill developed a sheep station in the district of Burra where subsequently copper was discovered. There was some involvement with Bundaleer. He then worked as a compositor in Morphett Street, Adelaide and later opened a school at Macclesfield, where he was also the resident police officer. He then returned to the north and resided in Laura where he was a contributor to the local newspaper, the Laura Standard.  He was also the clerk of the Booyoolie District Council for nearly 25 years.

Hill died in Laura, age 85.
