Description : |
Portrait of J.G. Sanders from Callioota from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/4). Kallioota (Callioota, Calioota) is on the lower eastern side of Lake Torrens: this area around Lake Torrens had only been discovered during the late 1850s by a number of explorers including John McDouall Stuart and Benjamin Babbage and Charles Swinden. Swinden was a pastoralist seeking new lands for his herds. With Murdoch Campbell and D Thompson he explored north west of Port Augusta towards Lake Torrens. For a number of years this region was named on maps of South Australia as 'Swinden's country'. Charles Swinden took up a lease in the region at kallioota and was later joined in this venture by John Hirst, Matthew Moorhouse and a Mr W Woods. On Swinden's early death in 1866 his son John James Swinden inherited Kallioota. |
