Description : |
Portrait of G. Morley from Oratunga from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/4). Surveyor and explorer John McKinlay was the first to take up land at Oratunga, having discovered permanent water at Moolooloo in the early 1850s with his partner John Rose. However due to the excessive stocking requirements in force at the time (which required 16 head of cattle or 100 sheep per square mile and a time limit of three months) he was never granted a lease. By 1853 McKinlay had disposed of most of his land in the north to John Chambers, including Oratunga (later Moolooloo). When copper was discovered in the northern Flinders a mine was opened at Oratunga on the southern edge of Chambers' Oratunga Run. The township of Oratunga was laid out in 1862-63, along the route to Port Augusta from the northern Flinders. It is not known whether G. Morley was associated with the township or the station. |
