Description :

Portrait of S. Jarvis from Mount Margaret from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/4).

Stephen Jarvis was the manager of the North West Bend property of Charles J F Campbell. Then in 1863 he formed the Mount Margaret run for Philip Levi. Mt Margaret comprised three leases with a total area of 483 square miles. It was later known as The Peake. The Peake Creek was discovered by John McDouall Stuart in June 1859 and was named by him after Edward John Peake the son-in-law of James Chambers, his sponsor. Mount Margaret is just north of this creek and further north than Chambers Creek. Peake Station was acquired by Kidman Holdings in 1898 and now forms part of Anna Creek Station, the largest working cattle station in the world.

The Peake Telegraph Station was established in 1870.

Stephen Jarvis was subsequently employed in the building of the Overland Telegraph Line under Sir Charles Todd in particular in the building of the Barrow Creek telegraph station, Northern Territory.

He died 5 December 1879 at Walkerville, age 52.
