Description :

Portrait of H. Fisher from Bundaleer from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/1).

John Bristow Hughes selected the Bundaleer run in 1839 following exploration of the area by Edward Eyre. C B Fisher acquired the run next and John Maslin and Robert Barr Smith were the next owners from 1876. At this time it was 312 square miles in extent and had a capacity of 90,000 sheep. John Maslin rapidly acquired sole control and in 1898 divided the property between his sons, with George taking up North Bundaleer run. Bundaleer sheep were recognised for the quality of their fleeces.

In 1911 the government acquired North Bundaleer for 'closer settlement' and the land was sub-divided: the house remained with about 1500 acres. The divided plots were small and never allowed the owners to make a success of their land. The Bundaleer Forest Reserve was created in 1873 under Surveyor-General George Goyder to provide South Australia with good quality building timber which it had always had to import. Bundaleer Reservoir was also built on part of the property between 1898 and 1903.

H. Fisher has not been identified, but may possibly have been a manager at some stage.
