Description : |
Portrait of G.B. Richardson from Leigh's Creek from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/2). Leigh's Creek was the name of a cattle run in the northern Flinders Ranges: the station was named for the creek discovered by Henry Leigh, a stockman employed by Alexander Glen. Glen was not the first leaseholder of the run, which had originally been taken up by George Bunn and John Weatherstone in 1857 and subsequently held by George Henry Davenport and William Fowler in 1859. Drought took a heavy toll on the levels of stocking and in 1867 it was described as 'unstocked'. No information has been located about G B Richardson. When the railway line was extended north in 1882 a station was built nearby and named Leigh's Creek railway station: a town grew up around the station and was named Copley in August 1891, causing some confusion. Coal was dicovered in the region in 1884, and subsequently the name Leigh Creek was transferred to the coalfield and the town that developed there. |
