Description :

Portrait of W. Taylor from Winnowie from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/1).

Charles Swinden held Winnowie Cattle station west of Beltana in partnership with Joseph Malakie, John Taylor and Dr Matthew Moorhouse. W. Taylor may have been related to John Taylor. By 1867 Winnowie was owned by Thomas Elder

Silver was discovered at Glen Osmond and the mine, the Wheal Gawler, was opened in 1841. When the mine was closed some of the miners went as far afield as the Northern Flinders Ranges, where they worked in the copper, gold and silver mines, including on Winnowie, Wirrialpa, and Mount Serle stations.
