Description : |
Portrait of W. Kingsmill from Mount Brown from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/2). Walter Kingsmill migrated to South Australia in 1848. He settled first at Stanley Flat near Clare and by the late 1850s and 1860s held land at Mt Brown in the Flinders Ranges, Woolundunga near Port Augusta, and further north held Mt Serle, Mt Chambers and Mt McKinlay. Mt Brown was a lease of 137 square miles and carried 6000 sheep and 1000 cattle at the time of the Legislative Council Select Committee into the Stock Act of 1858. It was a well-watered run with many wells sunk. Despite this however there were severe stock losses in the drought of the late 1860s. Pichi Richi Pass crosses the property. Kingsmill died 21 July 1884 at North Adelaide aged 60 years. |
