Description : |
Portrait of H. James from Blanchewater from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/1). Blanchewater was discovered by the explorer Benjamin Babbage during his expedition in 1855-56: a lease was taken out by John Baker who held the property for 15 years; surviving the severe drought of the 1860s despite severe losses from the drought and the subsequent flood when the drought broke. On his death his widow transferred the lease to Thomas Elder. The horses bred at Blanchewater became well known used extensively by Cobb and Co. coachline and as remounts fro the Indian Army, as well as carriage horses in Adelaide. The role of H. James at Blanchewater is not known but he was wounded in a fight with Aborigines at lake Perigundee in late 1865, while working for Henry Dean. |
