Description :

Portrait of James Louden from Yadlamalca from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/2).

James Louden was born 22 July 1818 in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Arriving in South Australia c. 1855, James Louden spent sometime managing properties for John Taylor before branching out on his own. He established Yadlamalka north west of Port Augusta and south of Lake Torrens and sank numerous wells to supply his stock. He sold the property to George Gooch, Henry Scott and Albert Hayward in January 1863 together with 14,000 sheep.

Louden meanwhile had acquired the lease for Carriewerloo also north west of Port Augusta but suffering badly in the droughts of the 1860s he gave up the lease in 1867.

Later he farmed at Mount Gambier and Cooke's Plains and but returned to the north to manage Arcoona station west of Lake Torrens.

James Louden died 15 August 1906. His son James Louden was also a manager of northern properties at Caroona and Booborowie stations.
