After gaining experience on farms and sheep stations, Richman took up land near Mount Brown in the Flinders Ranges. The Victorian gold rush deprived him of manpower and he himself also tried his luck at the diggings for a time but returned to Mount Brown and sheep farming. Richman Valley and Richman's Creek were named after him and are reminders of his presence in the area. His station's name was recorded as Italli Italli which is believed to be a corruption of Iccala Iccala. He and his family returned to England for a few years for the childrens' education. Later he left Mount Brown but acquired country at Lincoln Gap near Port Augusta about 1874 or 75. Richman is also recorded as holding a lease in the Pernatty Creek area to the west of Lake Torrens.

Henry John Richman died 2 August 1902 age 77 and is buried in West Terrace cemetery.
