Description : |
Portrait of H. Richman from Richman's Creek from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/4). Henry John Richman was born at Lymington, Hampshire in January 1826. He arrived in South Australia in 1839, when he was 13 years old with his parents and other family members. His father became Assistant Crown Solicitor and also Clerk of the Bench of Magistrates.
After gaining experience on farms and sheep stations, Richman took up land near Mount Brown in the Flinders Ranges. The Victorian gold rush deprived him of manpower and he himself also tried his luck at the diggings for a time but returned to Mount Brown and sheep farming. Richman Valley and Richman's Creek were named after him and are reminders of his presence in the area. His station's name was recorded as Italli Italli which is believed to be a corruption of Iccala Iccala. He and his family returned to England for a few years for the childrens' education. Later he left Mount Brown but acquired country at Lincoln Gap near Port Augusta about 1874 or 75. Richman is also recorded as holding a lease in the Pernatty Creek area to the west of Lake Torrens. Henry John Richman died 2 August 1902 age 77 and is buried in West Terrace cemetery. |
