Portrait of W. Warwick from Holloweelina from the S.A. Northern Pioneers' composite, 1850-1859 (shown in position on B 6912/3). William Warwick was born c. 1809 in Canonbie Liddisdale, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. He arrived in South Australia on the Fairfield (ship) with his wife and 3 children on 4 May 1839. Initially he worked for William and John Browne at Williamstown and then at Canowie station as their manager in 1850. In 1853 he and his family took up land themselves at Holowilena (Holowiliena) north east of Port Augusta. A large stone residence of eight rooms was later built on the property. From the original lease of 63 square miles, Warwick increased his land holding to 178 square miles by 1857. Holloweelina is still owned by members of the family as a sheep and cattle run. William Warwick also took up property at Hallett where his wife is buried. Holowilena Station was reported in the Register, 28 May 1919, page 6e, Observer, 9 August 1924, page 6a:
William Warwick died in Adelaide, 21 September 1864, aged 54. He is buried in the Campbelltown cemetery. |
