J. H. Angas came out to South Australia on the Madras (ship) in 1843 to manage his father's estate in the Barossa Valley. He established his house at Tarrawatta, first as a cottage and later the homestead known as Collingrove. He acquired pastoral properties at Mount Remarkable, Hill River near Clare and Point Sturt near Lake Alexandrina, as well as in the far north of the colony. He maintained his merino sheep stud at Hill River and a shorthorn stud at Point Sturt. His studs for these animals contributed significantly to raising the general standard of the stock in South Australia; Angas also worked to raise the quality of other farm stock including pigs and horses. The Mt Remarkable property was sold in 1882 to the Willowie Pastoral Company, but this company reverted to Angas as the major share holder because of its debt.

He was a member of the House of Assembly for the district of Barossa 1871-1876 and later a member of the Legislative Council for Central district 1887-1994. J. H. Angas was a great philnthropist, and active in community organisations including the Children's Hospital.

In 1849 writing as Agricola he published Description of the Barossa Range and its neighbourhood, in South Australia in which he extolled the beauty, fertility and potential of the Barossa Valley. The book is illustrated by his brother George French Angas.

John Howard Angas died at Collingrove on 17 May 1904.
