Description :

Expedition transport vehicle bogged in mud, en route to the Warburton Ranges, Western Australia, with (probably) Norman B Tindale attempting to dig out the tyre.

In 1935 Mountford travelled with an expedition to the Warburton Ranges, Western Australia, led by Norman Tindale of the South Australian Museum. Dr. C.J. Hackett of Adelaide University joined the team as Anthropometrist, and E.O. Stocker as cinematographer. This was Mountford's first organised scientific work in the field and he was employed as still-photographer and specialist in Aboriginal art. Many obstacles faced anthropologists travelling to remote areas of Australia at that time, especially as there were no roads, shops or other infrastructure. Vehicles were usually heavily overloaded with vital supplies, fuel and instruments. On this trip, the party once spent seven hours digging the truck out of the bog, using bushes to pack the track. Extreme weather conditions, illness, insects, vehicle breakdown and equipment failure often plagued scientific parties and must have sorely tested their resolve to carry out research.
