Samuel Stockwell's house which was situated about a quarter of a mile from the centre of the present town of Stockwell. A "gallows" can be seen in the centre of the sketch, it was used for skinning and cleaning carcasses. Stockwell is located at the base of the Barossa Range east of Nuriootpa, and on the main route to the River Murray, part of the stock route used by overlanders of the 1830s. In 1854 Samuel Stockwell founded the town on land bought from George Fife Angas. Stockwell also built a steam-powered flourmill in the region. |
