Description : |
South Australian pioneer Thomas Magarey. Brothers Thomas and James Magarey came to Adelaide in 1845 from Lancashire via New Zealand. Thomas had experienced a religious conversion a short time before, and in Adelaide he joined a group of 'Scotch Baptists'. The group purchased land in Franklin Street and built a chapel. Magarey and his fellow Christians took a non-denominational approach to Christianity, calling themselves the Church of Christ. They were influenced by the writings of Alexander Campbell, a founder of the American 'Disciples of Christ'. In 1856 a chapel was opened in Grote Street and it remains the site of the main city church for the denomination. Magarey became a rich man through his milling business and in 1860 entered South Australian Parliament. In 1880 he left the Church of Christ to join the local Brethren. |
