Description : |
Between 1955 and 1961 the Flaminia transported thousands of migrants to Australia. This 1957 photograph depicts the Flaminia leaving Pireaus, Greece, bound for Adelaide with Greek migrants (including Stella Karanastasis nee Despinoudis), many of whom are watching the departure from the deck. After World War Two, the Australian Government promoted the policy known as 'populate or perish' designed to increase the population of Australia to defend the country against invasion. From 1947 to 1983, nearly three million people immigrated to Australia. |
