Description :

Image from interview conducted with Senator Natasha Stott Despoja, one year after her election as leader of the Australian Democrats.

Natasha Stott Despoja is the youngest woman (at the age of 26) ever elected to the Parliament of Australia. In November 1995 the Democrats and the South Australian Parliament appointed her to replace Senator John Coulter, who retired due to ill-health. Stott Despoja completed the remainder of Coulter's term, and was elected to the federal Senate in March 1996.

In 1997 Stott Despoja was elected Deputy Leader of the Australian Democrats, with Senator Meg Lees as the Leader. Two years later, Natasha Stott Despoja with Democrat Senator for Queensland, Andrew Barlett, strongly opposed the Goods and Service Tax (GST) package which had been negotiated by Meg Lees and Prime Minister John Howard.

In April 2001 Stott Despoja was elected as the new leader of the Australian Democrats, the youngest person ever to lead a major political grouping in Australia; in August 2002, she resigned from this position. Stott Despoja did not seek re-election at the 2007 Federal election and her term expired at the end of June 2008.
