Description : |
Edward Eyre set out from adelaide to explore north of Spencer Gulf, searching for good pastoral lands. When he departed on 18 June 1840, his small party was escorted by a large body of well wishers, including ladies in a carriage. The drays loaded with supplies had left earlier. The scene is enlivened with the elegant horses and top-hatted riders, and with the pastoral quality of pigs, hens and goats scattered by the procession. Eyre had previously explored to the north of Adelaide, discovering Crystal Brook on the way. He spent some time exploring beyond the head of Spencer Gulf, before returning to Adelaide. He later went to Eyre Peninsula and explored the coastal regions to Streaky Bay and then north and discovered the Gawler Ranges. From here he progressed to his old depot at Mount Arden and explored some 200 kilometres north from there. Disappointed in the terrain, he returned to Adelaide before setting out again in June 1840. |
