The impact of the wreck of the Admella was so great that country towns across South Australia and western Victoria formed committees to raise reward and relief funds. Kooringa (Burra) was just one of these. At the meeting which was chaired by JW MacDonald, the stipendiary magistrate in the town, a motion of thanks was passed to the rescuers. It was also moved that the town's thanks be more practical than mere words and that just as other communities were raising funds for the relief of the survivors, and for the reward of the rescuers, so should Burra.

The meeting resolved that the appointed committee should begin their work the next Monday.

Admella had been wrecked 6 August 1859 on the Carpenter Rocks off Cape Banks in the South East. The ship had broken up almost immediately. Of the 87 passengers and 26 crew only 24 had survived. Rescue efforts had come from Portland in Victoria, from the men of the Cape Northumberland lighthouse and from steam ships that came from Adelaide and Victoria. The outpouring of grief and assistance from communities across South Australia and Victoria was enormous.
