At a public meeting held 22 August in Adelaide motions of thanks were passed for the assistance and heroism of the men who assisted in the rescue of the survivors of the wreck of the Admella; a motion to form a committee to collect subscriptions for the reward of the rescuers and for the refief of the survivors was also passed. This meeting was chaired by Governor Richard MacDonnell. The committee to administer this was formed the following day.

There was a surge of public interest and grief for the loss of lives and the plight of the survivors, as well as admiration for the heroism of the rescuers. After the main committee was formed smaller ones were formed throughout South Australia and others in Victoria.

As well as listing the members of the committee which included the Bishop of Adelaide, the Chief Justice, Samuel Davenport, Robert Torrens, John Morphett and many others, the committee also put out a call for those suffering money problems as a result of the wreck. 590 pounds had already been received in the fund, just a week after the last person from the wreck was safely ashore. In the following weeks nearly 7000 pounds would be raised in South Australia and Victoria.
