Description : |
The Australian Active Service Medal 1945-1975 with 'Vietnam' clasp, Australian Viet Nam Medal, and South Viet Nam Campaign Medal awarded to Wallace Alfred Lillebo. Lillebo joined the Regular Army in July 1962 and was discharged in July 1968, serving in the 5th Battalion of the Royal Australian Regiment. He was a medic in Vietnam for a year from May 1966-May 1967. The Australian Active Service Medal 1945-1975 was awarded to Australian personnel who saw warlike service between 3 September 1945 and 14 February 1975. It was authorised in 1997. Those eligible for the Vietnam Medal served during the period 29 May 1964 to 27 January 1973. The medal depicts Queen Elizabeth II on one side and on the other the image of a man between two spheres which represents the ideological struggle that was the basis of the war in Vietnam. The ribbon comprises a central yellow band with three thin red stripes representing the flag of the former Republic of South Vietnam. On either side are red stripes representing the Army and at the edges a dark blue stripe signifying the Navy (left) and a light blue stripe representing the Air Force (right). It was authorised in 1968. The Vietnamese Conflict Medal was awarded by the government of the Republic of Vietnam to those who served for 181 days or more in Vietnam and those who were wounded or killed in action. In the centre of the six-pointed star is a map of Vietnam with a red flame at its centre. The medal was issued with a bar engraved '1960 -'. Lillebo wrote reminiscences of his interest in hunting and shooting, and his Vietnam service. He died on 18 February 2004. |
