Description : |
A picnic held by the Boys Brigade on November 11 1893 at Belair National Park, South Australia. Dedicated in 1891, Belair National Park was the first National Park in South Australia, and the second such park in Australia, following Royal National Park near Sydney in 1879. Belair National Park is located on land previously used, from the 1840s, as the Government Farm. The reserve covers around 835 hectares, and includes Old Government House, the summer residence of some of the early Governors of South Australia. During the first few decades, mainly large groups, such as firm and church groups, used the Park for picnics, and accordingly large pavilions were built for shelter. After World War II, increasing access to the Park by families in private motor cars changed the emphasis to provision of facilities for smaller groups of visitors. From the 1920s, plantings were indigenous to the state; prior to this era, generally plantings of exotic tree species were undertaken. Today Belair National Park is part of the Greater Mount Lofty Parklands, 'Yurrebilla', which stretches along the Adelaide Hills. |
