Description : |
Irene Jessie May Bell married Thomas Barrett Bell, a political activist, in 1922 when she was just 16. In the 1940s feminists had formed the New Houswives Association, which in 1950 became the Union of Australian Women - a forerunner to the women's liberation movement. Irene was a member of the latter group from 1951 to 1969, and a delegate to the International Women's Day Committee as well as secretary of this body. In 1990 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to women's affairs. |
